Title:

Mixed Marriages in the Jewish Community: An Aberration or a Social Norm?

Subject and Keywords:

Jewish   family   heritage   cultural capital   intermarriage

Abstract:

The purpose of this article is to present the specific nature of mixed marriages in the Jewish community. According to many community leaders and representatives of social sciences, this issue should be taken into account in the first place, especially in the context of questions about changes, challenges and threats faced by the Jewish community today. This article examines several research reports on the effects of intermarriages on children in the United States, Britain, France, the Netherlands and Germany. Reference is also made to the situation of Polish Jewry – the main features of the cultural awareness of Jewish families: their attitude toward their cultural capital in the context of the history of Polish-Jewish relations and problems such as intermarriage, the generation gap or emigration to Israel.
