  Since profanities are primarily an oral phenomenon, research on their presence in children’s literature remainsrelatively scarce. This study aims to examine adults’ perceptions and acceptance of offensive language found inliterature intended for children and young adults. To this end, a total of 73 respondents evaluated the appropriatenessof Polish offensive expressions excerpted from the Polish translation of The Book of Dust – La Belle Sauvage by PhilipPullman. The results indicate that the acceptability of offensive words in children’s literature decreases as the age ofthe readership increases. Furthermore, the situational context in which book characters use the word and the degreeof its offensiveness also play a role in determining whether such language is acceptable. The study also identifies theexpressions perceived by the respondents as most offensive, ranking them from most to least offensive.
