The art of complexity – the utopian and skeptical impulses in Michael Oakeshott’s political education (sketch on conversation)

Subject and Keywords:

political education   liberal education   complexity of thinking and acting   democracy   mass man   conversation   Oakeshott

Abstract:

The article considers the concept of political education in the context of the complex nature of politics and the crisis of liberal democracy. The analysisis based on the work of the outstanding British philosopher Michael Oakeshott in three areas: the historical dialectic of utopian inclination and skeptical tendency in governance, the genesis of mass man and political education as one of the variants of the liberal education tradition. The author of the text uses the traces of Oakeshott to answer the question about the shape of political education, which takes seriously, on the one hand, the multi dimensionality and antagonistic nature of politics, and on the other hand – the problematic condition of contemporary democracy. All we know is that it cannot be education that introduces a person to a ready-made model of political action. Rather, it is about education that involves a initiation into the political conversation.
