Abstract:

The aim of the paper is to show main macroeconomic determinants of health and life expectancy. Based on a critical analysis of the literature, the impact of income, income inequality and poverty on health and life expectancy has been established. The relationship between income and life expectancy is observed both for people and countries. On the country level absolute income matters while relative income plays more important role on the individual level. Due to relative income hypothesis income inequalities have a negative effect on health and life expectancy. Moreover, poverty is strongly correlated with poorer health both in developing and developed countries.
