Theoretical and social analysis 2016-2019, funded by the National Science Center (Reg. No. 2015/19/B/HS5/03046). From May 2018 to September 2019, the Centre for Legal Education and Social Theory conducted a survey of teaching competencies among staff and doctoral students of the Faculty of Law, Administration and Economics at the University of Wroclaw (WPAE). The survey included 98 people out of 576 people teaching at WPAE at the time. Fifty-two people with master's degrees, 30 with doctoral degrees, 12 with habilitation and only four with professorships participated in the survey. The survey was supplemented by observations and interviews conducted within the framework of the Good Faculty program and an analysis of exams from the summer 2018/2019 session. The analysis of the data obtained allows us to conclude that the teachers of classes do not have adequate training to teach them. Before being allowed to teach classes, only subject-matter knowledge is checked, not teaching competence and skills. The main model for the ways of teaching is personal experience from student days – modeling on professors. At the same time, the mode of teaching is imposed from above – through the size of the groups, the layout of the teaching rooms and the subordination of the classes to the exam. The instructors have no discretion in how and what they will teach. Examinations only test knowledge, and the actual ways of examination do not coincide with the ways of examination preferred by the respondents. The above creates conditions for the reproduction of simple hierarchies and the absence of institutional reflection on education. Thus, teaching is dependent on those at the top of the university hierarchy, and in doing so does not take into account and excludes the viewpoints of other groups belonging to the university community.
