 abstract={Despite the existence of voluminous literature on the subject of women in Ancient Rome, which includes various aspects of their legal position, a woman’s right to take part in court proceedings is often overlooked or marginalized. As a consequence, this article is devoted to the active role women played in both civil and criminal proceedings. Issues related to women acting as witnesses or respondents/defendants have been left out. Instead, the author places emphasis on women’s voluntary actions within the framework of the proceedings.
