 abstract={Based on Japanese art’s rooting in emotions and aestheticization of everyday life I undertake the subject of women’s presence in cultural phenomena connected with art creation in two periods: Heian and Edo. Beginning with Heian period, I concentrate on the royal court culture, where women directly speaking through art lived. Their words contained in Murasaki Shikibu’s Genji Monogatari and Sei Shōnagon’s Makura no Sōshi and also the emakimono’s portrayals of women are going to support me in outlining the image of the period’s woman. The second part starts off with proposition how cultures of Heian and Edo can be connected. Moving forward, I am going to focus on another group of women – the courtesans, supporting myself with Ihara Saikaku’s novel Kōshoku ichidai onna and ukiyo woodblock prints. Presenting these issues will indicate a crucial problem: who is a woman and who speaks about her in Japanese art},
