The code frequently mentions separation of property of the husband and the wife, providing detailed rules of inheritance. Goods belonging to a woman passed to her heirs after her death. The property was divided also in the case of divorce. The article deals with divorce and the legal consequences of the dissolution of marriage as defined in the Gortyn Code. The author examines the issue of divorce initiative, blame for the break-up of marriage, rules of property distribution and penalties for the seizure of the husband’s goods by the wife.
