 abstract={One of the fundamental freedoms guaranteed by the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) is freedom from degrading treatment laid down in art. 3 of the Convention. Crucial for Polish-Russian relationsis the issue of the Katyn crime, on which the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) recognized that Russia has violated this regulation by having refused to grant the family representatives of the Katyn crime victims the status of aggrieved persons and to give access to the investigation files. It has also been deemed that the cooperation of Russian agencies with the Court was unsatisfactory. The verdict of the ECtHR, though not a turning point, surely makes a certain significant progress in closing the Katyn case, which for years has been a factor complicating Polish-Russian relations},
