abstract={In an immanent way, the child’s autonomy is linked to their freedom of thought, conscience and religion. The scope of a minor’s freedom is determined by their cognitive abilities that develop with age. The common element of the indicated freedoms is that they have their origins in the mental and intellectual processes of a child, resulting from their internal autonomy, and then, by taking specific behaviors, they are externalized and become a means of manifesting external autonomy. At the same time, parents have priority in bringing up a minor, including bringing them up in a way that suits parents’ beliefs. They also decide whether or not the child receives religious or ethical education. In practice, the rights of parents and the freedom of a child, especially an older one, may conflict with each other. The principles of exercising parental authority and the very purpose of exercising it – in the best interests of the child – serve to resolve the resulting conflicts. Recourse to the indicated principles does not always sufficiently safeguard the child’s autonomy. To a greater extent, this goal would be achieved by precisely defining the age limit from which a minor enjoys complete autonomy in terms of freedom of thought, conscience and religion, including the possibility of making an autonomous decision about religious or ethical education.},
