  At the request of the National Institute of Frederic Chopin in Warsaw, Poland, a scientific project was carried out, consisting in conducting forensic examinations of all manuscripts collected in the Chopin Museum in Warsaw, the creation of which was attributed to the great Polish composer. These studies did not lead to the disclosure of documents that would contain signs of forgery of Chopin’s handwriting, with one exception however: a manuscript containing the notes of the piano composition Impromptu in A flat major, Op. 29 from 1837 contained traces of retouching, additions to fragments of Chopin’s handwritten notes and signature, and additions to the ends of the staff for musical notations. The question therefore arose when these corrections to the original notations were made, and in particular whether they could have been made by the composer himself or his contemporaries, or whether they were made later. It was decided that the answer to this question could be facilitated by in-depth forensic and technical examination of the document and chemical tests of the covering agent (ink) used to make the entries and their corrections - to determine the homogeneity or lack of homogeneity of the covering agent and the time of changes in the document. Such examination was difficult because it was not possible to conduct it to the full extent in the laboratory; in particular, for safety reasons, samples for chemical tests had to be collected in situ, i.e. at the place where the questioned document was stored. The examination was carried out by experts from the Center for Forensic Sciences and the Center for Biological and Chemical Sciences of the University of Warsaw, and to complete it was necessary to create a unique, new method that turned out to be useful in the study of valuable documents of historical importance.

  Na zlecenie National Institute of Frederic Chopin in Warsaw, Poland został zrealizowany projekt naukowy, polegający na przeprowadzeniu kryminalistycznych badań wszystkich rękopisów zgromadzonych w Muzeum Fryderyka Chopina w Warszawie, których wykonanie przypisano wielkiemu polskiemu kompozytorowi. Badania te nie doprowadziły do ujawnienia dokumentów, które zawierałyby oznaki fałszowania pisma Chopina, z jednym jednak wyjątkiem: rękopis zawierający nuty kompozycji fortepianowej Impromptu AS-dur op. 29 z roku 1837 zawierał ślady retuszy, uzupełnień fragmentów zapisów ręcznych i podpisu Chopina oraz uzupełnienia końcówek pięciolinii. Powstało zatem pytanie, kiedy te poprawki pierwotnych zapisów zostały wykonane, a w szczególności, czy mogły zostać dokonane przez samego kompozytora lub jemu współczesnych albo też czy dokonano ich później. Uznano, że odpowiedź na to pytanie mogą ułatwić pogłębione kryminalistyczno-techniczne badania dokumentu oraz badania chemiczne środka kryjącego (atramentu), jakim wykonano zapisy i ich poprawki – dla ustalenia jednorodności lub braku jednorodności środka kryjącego oraz czasu powstania zmian w dokumencie. Badania takie były utrudnione, ponieważ nie było możliwe ich przeprowadzenie w pełnym zakresie w laboratorium; w szczególności ze względów bezpieczeństwa próbki do badań chemicznych musiały być pobrane in situ, tj. w miejscu przechowywania kwestionowanego dokumentu. Badania zostały przeprowadzone przez ekspertów Centrum Nauk Sądowych oraz Centrum Nauk Biologiczno-Chemicznych Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego, zaś dla ich zrealizowania konieczne było stworzenie unikalnej, nowej metody, która okazała się przydatna w badaniach cennych dokumentów o historycznym znaczeniu.
