Persons suffering from different emotional problems often use the services of psychotherapists. However, the patient/customer – psychotherapist relationship may cause issues of an ethical/bioethical nature. Deliberately or unconsciously, psychotherapists are able to interfere in the identity of their patients/customers; influence their decisions and life choices. The principle of the autonomy of the patient plays an essential role. There is no equality between the sides in the patient/customer – psychotherapist relationship, unless psychotherapists observe fundamental ethical principles. Ethics is supposed to set the borders for acceptable alterations to the identities of persons using the help of psychotherapists. In achieving equality in the therapeutic relationship, clinical supervision comes in handy, as well. By and large, the authors’ aim is to show that ethics should set the borders of the relationship between the psychotherapist and the patient/customer and should guarantee equality between the sides in the therapeutic relationship.
